Alerts Overview

Your SOFTWARE includes innovative Alerts functionality that will save you considerable time in checking potential investments each time you download new data.

Instead of downloading the data and manually running scans and other checks to determine if the securities you have been watching have changed in some vital way, you can set alerts that watch various aspects of those shares for you. If the conditions you have been waiting for occur, you will see an alert for that security upon which you can immediately act.

You can use Alerts to set stops for securities you currently own - you will never miss an exit point again - or to set conditions under which you might be interested in moving a security from your potential investment list to your actual investment list.

Alerts in General

Alerts are used to detect when a particular security has met or exceeded certain criteria.

The criteria is defined and set by the user, and consists of one expression, such as "Close of the current day Is Less Than Low of 3 days ago".

A symbol can have more than one alert created for it, and any number of alerts can be created.

Alerts are saved in the Current Alerts list. They can be set to be active or inactive.

The symbols in the list can be from any exchange.

The Check for New Alerts command is clicked to compare the criteria of all currently active alerts against each symbol's freshly updated data.

The individual results of the check are added to the Activated Alerts list.

Each row in the alerts list contains the details of individual symbol's alert, including date, criteria expression, etc.

The Action menu allows you to select a particular symbol's alert and view that symbol's chart, price data, details, etc.

Both the alerts and results lists can be printed.

You can open the alerts window either by selecting Alerts from the Tools drop down sub-menu:

Alerts Work Page

Alerts are set and displayed on the alerts work page.

There are three main parts to the alerts work page: the Command Area, the Current Alerts tabbed page and the Activated Alerts tabbed page.

Command Area

The commands in the Alerts Command Area control the display of alerts criteria and alerts results in the work page to the right.

The first two commands toggle the work page display between two tables.

Current Alerts

The command displays a list of all alerts, whether active or inactive, in the Current Alerts work page.

It also provides some details of the alert's criteria.

Activated Alerts

Click this command to change the work page display to Activated Alerts.

This list shows all alerts that have been triggered and provides details of the date on which the alert was triggered.

Check for New Alerts

This initiates the retrieval of data from the server for each active alert and a comparison of that data with the alert's criteria.

If an alert is triggered, the alert will be added to the Activated Alerts list.

Print

Either the Current Alerts work page or the Activated Alerts page can be printed.

First display the page to be printed, then select the print command.

A print preview will appear. Make any necessary adjustments and click the print icon butn_print.gif to send the document to the printer.

Add a new Alert

Click Add a New Alert to create a new alert.

Edit Selected Alert

Select an existing alert from the Current Alerts work page and then click Edit Selected Alert to make changes to it.

Note - This command is disabled when the Activated Alerts work page is displayed.

The last three commands depend on the underlying security of the selected alert.

The alerts can be selected from either work page.

Price Data

Opens the Price Data work page for the selected Alert's symbol.

Chart

Opens a Price Chart work page for the selected Alert's symbol.

Information

Opens a Detailed Symbol Information window for the selected Alert's symbol.

Current Alerts table

The Current Alerts work page displays a list of symbols for which alerts are currently set, and a short description of the alert criteria for each symbol:

When this work page is displayed, click the Add a New Alert command to create a new alert for a symbol or select a particular alert and click Edit Selected Alert to change its parameters.

In this page you can also manage your current Alerts using the Remove Selected Alert command.

For more information on viewing and managing your current alerts, go to the Current Alerts page's help topic.

Activated Alerts table

Click the Check for New Alerts command to apply the current alerts to current data.

If the current data triggers any alerts set for any of the symbols, a dialog box will display advising you of the result:

This dialog means that from your current list of alerts, two were triggered when fresh data was applied to all of the alerts.

Click Yes to view the New Alerts, the Activated Alerts work page will display all triggered alerts, including the two new alerts:

The table on the Activated Alerts work page gives details of when and why the alert was triggered for each symbol.

For more information, go to the Activated Alerts page's help topic.
