Price data is retrieved and refreshed by user initiated Data-on-Demand (DoD) request or by DoD triggers that can be set by the user in the Remote Data tab of the Application Settings.
The most obvious form of user initiated data-on-demand request is when the user clicks the blue DoD Refresh button:
This is used to initiate a price data refresh for the current price chart or , quote page or portfolio.
DoD price data updates can also be set to be triggered by certain events, such as each time a saved chart is opened.
Settings for these triggers are located in the Remote Data tab of the Application Settings dialog box.
Whether the command is manual or triggered by an event, the results of the price data update request is the same.
When a DoD refresh is initiated, the progress of the response from the Data Provider's server will be displayed in the Remote Action Panel:
You can also detach the Remote Action Window from the Access Panel to show more details of the progress of the download in a floating window:
For more information refer to the Remote Action Window topic.
The result of using the DoD Refresh buttonto refresh an object in Your SOFTWARE will depend on what the item is, and what other data components it references.
When you select the green DoD Refresh button from a price chart's function bar, the price data for all charts in the work area (i.e. the base chart and any overlaid charts), and Indicators and data based tool outputs, will be immediately updated to display the current data.
Data will be retrieved and updated from the point of the last most recent data. If earlier historical data has been lost or corrupted, the update will not detect this and will not replace or overwrite the corruption.
Likewise, if the data initially downloaded to create the chart was less than the default 36 months, a DoD Refresh button refresh will not retrieve missing historical data even if the current setting is back to 36 months or more.
All of the symbols are refreshed with current price data.
There is no requirement for any more data than a ‘snap-shot’ of the very most recent data. This can be quickly retrieved using the green DoD Refresh button.
While the price data is being retrieved for updating, the prices on your quote pages will be highlighted in yellow. When the new data is retrieved, the highlighting will turn off.
If you have streaming data and turn it on, the prices in the quote chart will flicker with yellow highlights as they change.
Some of the symbols used in the Quote Pages may change, be deleted from the exchanges, expire, etc. Symbols are system data and are not updated when the DoD Refresh button refreshes a Quote Page. To refresh the system data, use the Update Manager.

Some of the functions in Portfolios rely on interest rates, currency conversions, etc. These are system data and are not updated when the DoD Refresh button to refresh a portfolio page.

Scans do not have a blue Data-on-Demand Refresh button; rather the Start button will initiate a price data request.
Whether new data is retrieved and placed on your PC will depend on a number of factors. The first is whether the scan is performed on-line or off-line.
The only data retrieved as a result of an on-line scan is the scan results.
When the Start button is selected for an on-line scan, Your SOFTWARE sends the scan query to the server and the data scan is performed on the data in the server. Any results are then sent back to Your SOFTWARE for display in the scan results table.
The data returned will also depend on whether you have selected Use Current Date, in which case a data ‘snap-shot’ of the very most recent data will begin for all the symbols in the designated market.
If you nominated an earlier Search Date, the price data retrieved will be the closing prices for the indicated day for all the symbols in the designated market.
In either case, the Remote Action window will display while the scan is being performed in the server.
For more information, go to the Scanning section.
Alerts do not have a blue Data-on-Demand Refresh button; rather the Check for New Alerts command will initiate a price data request.
The price data retrieved will depend on the expressions created for each symbol.
The expression will be sent to the server. The data on the server is compared with the expression, price data for all symbols that satisfy the expression is sent back to the local PC for display.
While the price data request is being processed, the Remote Action window will display similar to Scans.
For more information, go to the Alerts section.
