Market Scan Results

Market Scan Results

The scan results for market scans are displayed in tables.

The results in the tables can be sorted using filters, and the user can select individual results for more detailed analysis using the Action menu or pop-up menu.

The results can be saved and the saved scan result can later be scanned by another market scan, or saved and exported as a comma separated value (.csv) file, or simply saved and reopened for historical analysis purposes.

Display Scan Results

The scan results for market scans appear on their own tabbed page, while the pre-computed scan results appear on the same page as the scan selector. The tables used to display each type of result are similar, but are sufficiently different to require separate descriptions.

Market Scan Results

Each time scan criteria is applied to new market data, new scan results are produced.

The results of the scan will appear in a table on the Search Results tabbed page:

The securities that satisfy any of the criteria will be listed in individual rows in the order that they were detected. The symbol, and a link to its price chart, for each matching security will be displayed.

The date of the data on which the scan was performed is listed next to the symbol.

Each criteria expression will be listed in the column headings of the scan results table.

When the security satisfies the criteria, the details of this successful match are displayed in the criteria field for that security, or simply the word “True”. If the security does not meet the criteria, the criteria field for that security will be blank, indicated by a dash.

When there are multiple expressions, and many symbols which only meet some of the criteria, the filter function can be used to sort and interpret the results.

Filters

The results can be filtered by removing all results which have not satisfied a particular criteria expression.

Display All Results

By default, results meeting any criteria are displayed, and the filter icon for each criteria is colored red butn_filteroff.png, indicating that the filter for that criteria is turned “off”:

By default the maximum number of results are displayed, in this case 1,479 symbols meet some or all criteria and therefore will be displayed.

Where criteria have not been met, a small dash will appear in the column.

Where criteria have been met, the word True or details of the criteria will be displayed.

Selective Display

To filter out the display of specific criteria groups, click on each criteria's filter icon to turn the filter “on”. The filter icon will turn green butn_filteron.png.

Turning a criteria's filter on will exclude from the table any symbols that do not satisfy that particular criteria.

Turning some filters on, and leaving others off will result in some symbols being displayed which do not meet all the criteria.

In the example the first symbol does not meet the Price criteria but its filter is not turned on, so the symbol will remain in the table with a small dash indicating that it does not meet that specific criteria.

The number that meet the filtered criteria is indicated in the Are Shown statistic. In the above example 289 results satisfy both the Gap Up and the Moving Average criteria.

The Are Shown number will vary depending on which filters are turned on or off.

Restricted Display

To show only results which meet all the criteria, turn all of the filters “on”.

In this case, 78 symbols will be displayed in the table. All symbols in the table will satisfy all of the criteria in the scan, hence 78 Meets All and 78 Are Shown.

Use Scan Results Action Menu

Once the scan is complete and you have a list of securities that match the scan criteria, you can then start to use those scan results for trading or further analysis.

For both user-defined and pre-computed scan results the main tools for analyzing the scan results can be found in the Scan Results' Action Menu. It provides a link between the securities listed on the scan results table, and other features and functionality.

Market Scan Results Action Menu

The features included in the Action menu affect both the individual symbols identified by the scan, as well as the full results lists:

Actions for "Symbol"

Single left mouse-click on any of the results, the row will be highlighted in blue and the Actions for command in the Action menu will be populated with the symbol. Roll the mouse over the Actions for "Symbol" command to display its sub-menu.

The Actions for "Symbol" submenu provides links to other tools specific to that symbol

The following commands are available for each symbol:

Save Search Criteria

Use this command to save any changes you have made to the search criteria.

It has the same effect as the Save button butn_save.gif on the scan page's function bar.

Like the Save button, the Save Search Criteria command is enabled only after you have made savable changes to the scan. Prior to making changes it is grayed-out, indicating that it is not currently available.

Save Scanner As…

This command allows you to save a copy of the current scan under a different name. Normally this is done when a number of scans with very similar criteria, for example where only one of the expressions is different, are created.

It is also useful in creating user customized scans based on the pre-computed scans.

Save Search Results

This command saves the list of current scan results, rather than the criteria that produced those results.

When you choose to save the search results, click the Save Search Results command and the following dialog will appear.

Enter a File name and click Save to save.

The navigation, display and file management tools located in the top right are the same as for other Windows® file selector dialog. For more information on this functionality, go to the File Selector topic in the Shared Utilities section of this Help.

Effect of Filters

Only results currently displayed on the table will be saved.

Use the Filters to enlarge or decrease the range of symbols saved. If you have restricted the display of results using the Filters function, only the symbols shown will be saved. The save results functionality adheres to the What-You-See-Is-What-You-Save philosophy.

Note - The Scanner Results drop down list in the Search On selection area of the create new off-line scan dialog, uses the Select Market Scan Result dialog box to select scans results to be scanned.

Scanning scan results allows you to make progressively narrower searches.

Print Results

Alternatively, you can choose to print the scan results.

Click Print Results and the standard print dialog box will appear.

Refer to the Printing topic in the Shared Utilities section of this User Guide.

Use Filters to enlarge or decrease the range of symbols printed. If you have restricted the display of results using the Filters function, only the symbols shown will be printed. As with the Save Search Results command, this functionality adheres to the What-You-See-Is-What-You-Print philosophy.

Print "About this Scan"

This command is used to print the contents of the About This Scan notes tabbed page.

The notes on this page can be used to describe how the scan works, or provide more information on the particular group of scan results.

Note - If no notes have been added to the About this Scan page, this command will be disabled.

Export Scan Results

Select the Export Results command to export a text file in the comma separated values (file extension .csv) format.

The .csv (comma separated value) file format is accessible in a number of applications, including MS Excel®.

The Export Results As... dialog will open:
