Keeping Portfolios Up-to-Date

Keeping portfolios up-to-date has two aspects:

  • Maintaining the records of your transactions up-to-date, and
  • Keeping the price data and system data, and hence the calculations based on fresh data, up to date

Edit Transactions

Transactions can initially be added to the portfolios in a number of different states or circumstances.

For example, you can place an order with your broker and add the transaction as ‘unfilled’. It will be recorded in the Orders worksheet of the Portfolio Details workpage, this is the only place it will appear until it is "Filled".

When your broker notifies you that the order has been executed you must manually update the transaction with the exact details, and change its status to ‘Filled’.

This change is made in the Edit Transaction dialog box. Refer to the Recording Transactions help topic.

Price Data Maintenance

The data displayed for each symbol in you Portfolios will become ‘stale’ over time and should be periodically refreshed using Your SOFTWARE's Data-on-Demand functionality.

Auto Refresh Settings

When and how your portfolio’s data is updated depends on the settings in the Remote Data tab of the Application Settings dialog box.
The default setting is to update data when a new window is opened.

In the case of portfolios, this setting will cause a DoD request to be automatically made to the server when you open a Portfolio.

After the download, all of the symbols are refreshed with current last price data. While the data distribution is taking place the fields will be yellow, they will return to normal when the update is complete.

There is no requirement for any more data than a ‘snap-shot’ of the very most recent data so this process is quite quick.

Depending on the exchange, during the period that you leave your window open, the prices may change and new data may become available from the server.

Manual Refresh

At any time you can update all of the symbols in the Portfolio Manager by using the DoD Refresh button: butn_go-off.gif

Price Data Update Result

When price data is updated you can confirm the details of the update in the Remote Action Window and the Last Traded field for each symbol will be today’s date for an open exchange, or the last date that the exchange was open if it is closed.

The new prices will be automatically used to update the value of your portfolios, etc.

System Data Maintenance Issues

The interest rates and currencies and cross rates are updated using a slightly different methodology. This data is system data, it is not related specifically to individual symbols as price data is, and system data is used throughout Your SOFTWARE for various purposes.

Update Manager

Updating the interest rates and currencies will affect the prices calculated in your Portfolios.

Also, some of the symbols used in the Portfolios may change, be deleted from the exchanges, expire, etc. Symbols are also system data, and are not updated when the DoD Refresh button to refresh a portfolio page.

To refresh system data, use the Update Manager.
